Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) Shipping

Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) Shipping: FAQ

What is Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) shipping?

Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) shipping is used when smaller freight does not require the use of an entire trailer, and typically ranges between 150 and 15,000 pounds. This method of freight makes up a significant portion of B2B shipping in North America.

Shipping LTL is typically more affordable for smaller shipments because you share the transportation costs with other companies (you only pay your portion of the trailer according to the amount of product shipped and the length of travel). LTL shipments often make several stops and there are typically multiple points of consolidation and deconsolidation required to complete a single shipment. This complex process can sometimes lead to confusing invoices, missed deliveries, or miscommunication, even with the most experienced transportation logistics companies.

What are the advantages of using LTL shipping?

  • Improved safety: When compared to parcel shipping, a well-packaged pallet (common for LTL shipments) has a better chance of remaining secure than freight with multiple handling units.

  • Real-time tracking: The LTL carriers that we partner with offer tracking capabilities through a variety of methods (bill of lading number, PO number, date range, etc.) that can be viewed easily on our online portal.

  • Cost-effective: When you book an LTL shipment, you only pay for the portion of the trailer used. The rest of the trailer’s space is occupied by other companies, which helps subsidize the cost.

When should I choose LTL shipping over other freight transportation options?

LTL shipping is ideal for businesses who have freight under 15,000 pounds and do not require a full trailer. You should also consider LTL shipping when you are looking to maximize cost savings!

What are the different types of Trucking Equipment that is served with LTL shipping?

Moving an LTL shipment typically means you must share a trailer with other occupants, so there may be some constraints with the availability of trailers if you require special considerations for your freight (oversized, temperature-controlled, etc.). For typical LTL shipments, the more widely used trailers are dry vans and flatbeds. At Orangeway, we pride ourselves in being able prioritize security and price for our clients, so that we identify the best fit for all freight. What are features that influence my LTL shipping rates?

There are numerous considerations that go into moving LTL freight and each situation comes with its own set of challenges. The reason you look for a great partner like Orangeway is so that you have the confidence in knowing your logistical needs are taken care of, and at the best price on the market!

The most common features that influence LTL shipping rates start with the weight and dimension of the freight. Normally, the heavier load and extra space occupied on the truck leads to higher prices. A similar logic applies for the destination, with the longer distance typically leading to a higher price. A special consideration for destinations would need to be specified where locations have limited access for carriers, such as rural locations, strip malls, and construction sites.

There are several more influential features that go into determining a shipping quote, such as:
